The Houston Schiller Community Chorus is an active and growing community ensemble. Our chorus is conducted by Maestro Dorceal Duckens. Mr. Duckens is a noted, classically trained bass/baritone who studied bel canto musical technique under Dr. Robert Henry at Prairie View A & M. He is a founding member of the Houston Ebony Opera Guild along with Dr. Henry. All rehearsals and performances of our chorus are held at the Verdi tuning of c=256 HZ (approximately A=432 Hz). The Schiller Community Choruses take their name from Friedrich Schiller, the German poet of freedom. Beethoven's 9th Symphony is a setting of Schiller's poem, "Ode to Joy."
Our chorus repertoire is dedicated to the great composers of classical European composition and the American Negro Spiritual. Our chorus has performed the great works of Handel, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, along with great classical arrangers and composers of the Spirituals, including Harry Burleigh, Hall Johnson, and William Dawson. The combination of the proper pitch, bel canto training and qualified musical direction allow for a young chorus to have a warmth and fullness of sound which can surprise even professional musicians. We believe that everyone can sing, so come sing with us! Rehearsing Tuesday evenings, 6PM -7:30 PM, at Bayland Community Center.
